SSAF AMENDMENTS A WIN FOR STUDENTS AT NEWCASTLE
The Newcastle University Students’ Association (NUSA) welcomes the announcement by the Federal Government this week that key recommendations to improve and strengthen the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) have been adopted.
NUSA has been campaigning hard alongside the National Union of Students to secure amendments to the National Student Representation Protocols since the draft was released late last year.
Newcastle students had previously expressed concerns about the level of student involvement required in the process of allocating revenue from the SSAF.
NUSA Education Officer, Deahnna Richardson said, “NUSA has been working hard to ensure that students will be guaranteed a say in determining how their money will be spent once the SSAF is introduced and these amendments ensure students’ voices are heard.”
“Newcastle students who have been participating in the nationwide ‘Students’ Money to Students’ campaign since the beginning of this year, are pleased to see that the Government has listened to their concerns,” Ms Richardson said.
Under the updated Protocols, universities will be required to engage in a formal process of consultation with democratically elected student representatives about specific uses of proceeds from the fee, and to consider their views on funding priorities.
President of NUSA, Heather Richards said, “NUSA looks forward to building on the working relationship we have with the University to get the best possible range and quality of services and representation for students at Newcastle.”
The Student Services and Amenities Fee will assist Newcastle University in rebuilding vital student services that suffered under the Howard Government’s introduction of Voluntary Student Unionism.
