STUDENTS CELEBRATE RETURN OF SERVICES
The Newcastle University Students’ Association (NUSA) welcomes the introduction of the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which was passed yesterday in Parliament.
President of NUSA, Heather Richards said, “The Student Services and Amenities Fee will assist Newcastle University in rebuilding vital student services that suffered under the Howard Government’s introduction of Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU).
“Students frequently complain about the lack of community spirit and essential services. We believe the SSAF will reverse the situation for the benefit of all students.”
However, Ms Richards warns that for the SSAF to be of full benefit to students there must be a high level of consultation. “Students must have active input into the distribution of the fee to ensure transparent, accountable and responsible use of our money. The Government is to be commended for adopting key recommendations to the legislation, requiring Universities to consult with student organisations like NUSA.”
NUSA has been running on a shoe-string budget since the introduction of VSU which has created many challenges to the organisation. NUSA Education Officer, Deahnna Richardson said, “It is important that the student body be properly funded to support student-run clubs and societies and to ensure independent representation and advocacy.”
“Newcastle students who have been participating in the nationwide ‘Students’ Money for Students’ campaign since the beginning of this year, are pleased that the Government listened to their concerns,” said Ms Richardson.
Ms Richards said, “NUSA looks forward to building on the working relationship we have with the University to get the best possible range and quality of services and representation for students at Newcastle.”
