YESTERDAY (22/09/2011) THE GOVERNMENT RELEASED THE KNIGHT REVIEW

Download the review: 2011 Knight Review

The Government has accepted all 41 of the recommendations. It appears that Universities have come out of this really well, but TAFEs and VETs look disadvantaged.

Over the past couple of years, a number of VET colleges have closed which has led to an increased wariness around that sector, but TAFEs are state government run.

International students applying to study here will not have to demonstrate such large sums of financial support and the visa application process will be simplified. Mandatory cancellation will be removed giving DIAC officers the ability to view each case on its individual merits.

Michael Knight makes reference to the distinction between a "genuine student" and a "genuine temporary applicant". The relationship between studying here and migration is mentioned with the emphasis being on international students being "genuine temporary applicants" over "genuine students".

It is clear that there will have to be careful procedures in place for DIAC officers to distinguish between "genuine temporary applicants" and those not genuine to ensure no "genuine students" are refused places.

We'll update this page with NUSA's position on this. In the meantime, below are a collection of interesting media releases and newspaper articles.
