HORN OF AFRICA - WHAT IS HAPPENING
The ‘Horn of Africa’ is a geographical location situated in Eastern Africa, and countries within this region are currently being affected severely by the worst drought in 60 years, with a massive food crisis as a result. The worst affected countries are Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, and other surrounding countries including Djibouti, Sudan and South Sudan, as wel...l as Uganda are now being affected by the food crisis also.
13.3. million people are currently affected and the intense famine, drought and unhygienic conditions have claimed the lives of several thousands of people, with close to a million people predicted to starve to death in the coming months. The precarious conditions in Somalia have led to a million refugees to cross the borders in mostly Ethiopia and Kenya. The distribution of aid for other people in Somalia has been difficult to achieve with the immense civil unrest, with only a quarter of the aid provided being able to reach affected peoples.
The Horn of Africa has a notorious past for severe famine and drought. The death toll, according to the UNHCR is roughly 7.4% per 10 000 people per day, and this is doubled for children under five years old.
The UNHCR has recently announced that donations will be matched dollar for dollar by the Australian government. People in who are suffering from this crisis need aid and supplies urgently. With the government contribution, now is an optimum time to raise money. Australia as a whole so far has been one of the biggest donators of the crisis, with $88 million donated so far. Help us raise money for this crisis with a fundraiser coming up soon!
