IT Forum - 1st August 2011 - Bar on the Hill
Questions (in bold) put to Mary Sharp and Ann Walters and discussed.
1. Why do I have to re-map my U: drive, every single time, on every
single computer I log onto?
Is it happening for everyone? Shouldn’t be. The IT department need to know the extent to remedy it. A small handful of labs are managed by faculties. By reporting to 17000 the issue can be tracked.
2. Why do the network / log on scripts take so long to run? (They reduce computer performance and extend the time I need to spend in front of the PC doing effective work.
IT is aware that login scripts take time. Involves; updates, security checks, software. A Windows 7 pilot is attempting to clear up login scripts. General purpose labs need to cater for all students. A student suggested being able to make preferences for the required boot up scripts. Appears it would be complex to implement.
3. Ever since the IT services were amalgamated under one 'umbrella' I have been unable to access my work files from home via the FTP service that the engineering IT department used to provide, why was it removed?
Not sure why it was removed. Jumpgate is available on request of teaching staff. It is probably possible to set up storage folder in studentmail and IT will investigate this. IT is willing to consider other options for remote access if they are secure. What is it exactly that is needed?
4. Why was the decision made to use Microsoft Live as the mail provider for the students when Google Mail provide the same service for what I was lead to be free for educational institutions?
Costing neutral decision – both vendors provide their product to students at no charge. Extensive evaluation was completed comparing the options. Students and staff involved. Criteria better met by Microsoft at that time, particularly in terms of security for students. Microsoft and Google constantly in competition, leapfrogging. Some NUSA reps may view and report if further information about the decision is required.
5. Why does the network at the university not allow my laptop to connect to it when the wireless uses reach a certain amount? (It would appear that after about 10:30am some user cannot reconnect to the wireless service, is this the result of a too smaller DHCP pool for the wireless?
IT trying to keep up with number of devices connecting; about 3000 connecting every day. IT is not aware of any particular problem locations at the moment but does monitor to identify and resolve them as quickly as possible. Any problem areas should be reported to 17000. Signposting Wi-Fi hotspots should start soon.
6. What is stopping you from allowing us print from our laptops / wireless devices?
Current system can’t charge printing for wireless. A new system is being planned that will improve the privacy of printing and wastage levels.
7. Why do engineering students in 4th year not have the ability to install software that they need to complete project work, without calling 17000 every time? (Lack of adequate admin privileges for engineering students)
Students need permission from supervisors and academic staff. Once approved, submit request through 17000.
8. What ever happened to the manned IT Help desks that used to be in the library and the CT building?
Removed. Re-balancing of resources to where demand was, which was in phone support.
9. Can we get rid of the proxy?
Proxies are necessary, but current proxy will be swapped out soon.
10. Rooms need swipe card access to allow better use.
Unaware of issue, in particular the issue with access to V203. Needs to be a push to meet what is required by maths students, that is access to the learning resources and programs they need.
11. Can someone please explain the ridiculousness of having to unenroll in a clashing course if you miss your first preference tute under the new enrolment system?
Two part issue. IT and student services. IT aspect was well tested but received unexpected load despite spreading out course openings. Admit that they got it wrong, next semester will incorporate busy pages. And will develop a clash warning message before allowing enrolment instead of blocking the process.
A student rose being able to nominate priorities to tutes, to allow students to be “shuffled” in a fairer manner.
13. Have the IT service thought about implementing a "usage meter" that tells you things like how long you have spent on Facebook/allowing you to block Facebook after a certain amount of usage or some such.
The IT department is to investigate the idea of productivity management software.
