DRAFT DOCUMENT FROM THE UNIVERSITY REGARDING SATURDAY AND NIGHT EXAMINATIONS - PLEASE COMMENT!

Below is a copy of the draft proposals from the University regarding Saturday and night examinations. Please comment on the proposals to aide with our feedback.
Procedure for students unable to sit exams on a Saturday or at night whose reasons do not fall within the guidelines of the Special Consideration Policy
Currently students seeking a rescheduled examination can apply to sit an exam in the Supplementary period on the following grounds:-
Allowable special circumstances may include one or more of the following:
i. medical grounds - including psychological illness;
ii. disability or long term medical condition (where performance in a particular assessment is adversely affected);
iii. compassionate grounds – for example the death or serious injury of a close family member or close friend;
iv. hardship or trauma – for example sudden loss of employment; family breakdown; severe disruption to domestic arrangements; impact of crime or accident; impact of natural disasters;
v. unavoidable commitments within the term and/or exam period – eg unavoidable work commitments; cultural or religious commitments; commitments as a student Reservist within the Australian Defence Forces or as an elite athlete; and/or jury duty or other court appearances.
The above guidelines cover child care arrangements, religious and work commitments. We acknowledge that transport and safety issues for night exams (after 6pm) and on Saturdays can be a problem for some students. Similarly sporting and work commitments, whilst not generally an accepted reason to request a rescheduled exam, should be considered for Saturday exams.
Please note that Special Circumstances is changing to Adverse Circumstances and a new policy will be in place from January 1 2012 (Policy Number 000939, web link http://www.newcastle.edu.au/policy/000939.html )
Students seeking a rescheduled examination on the grounds of transport, work, safety or sporting commitments should email
